I’m not a morning person and rarely ever make it to the parks before 11 am (no rope dropping for me). Going to Kona Cafe to try their Tonga Toast has been on my Disney bucket list for years. So, I finally made a reservation and set my alarm for an early start.
I normally love the atmosphere of the Polynesian Village Resort, but there was a lot of construction taking place during our visit that we were shouting our conversation to one another. If a Kona Cafe breakfast (or any meal) is on your bucket list too, I would recommend checking that one off after the renovations have been completed.
We tried two plant-based breakfast items, Tonga Toast and Plant-based Loco Moco. The Tonga Toast needs to be requested plant-based. This giant toast is stuffed with very sweet and ripened bananas and coated in cinnamon sugar. It’s served with a side of strawberry compote, but, honestly, the bananas and cinnamon sugar are so sweet that I didn’t use much of the compote. Instead of meat accompaniment, I had home-fried potatoes for my side.
The Tonga Toast did not disappoint. It was super sweet and decadent. If you are into sweets for breakfast then this is a must-try. I’m not sure how often I would wake up early to get this. It was pretty decadent and rich and I normally like a simple breakfast in the morning, especially when I’m going to the theme parks. I’m still glad I finally tried this one.
If savory is more your jam in the morning, you’ll want to try the Plant-based Loco Moco. This dish comes with plant-based eggs, sausage, coconut milk, rice, and pico de gallo. The pico de gallo gave it a bit of a Tex-Mex flavor. If it came with a tortilla, you could make yourself a satisfying breakfast burrito. This was also a hefty portion, but still, a good option if you do not like sweets in the morning.
Kona Cafe probably will not become my new go-to for breakfast since I like something a little lighter in the morning. It’s definitely worth a try at least once to taste the legendary Tonga Toast. I would recommend going here on a non-park day or allowing yourself some time to go back to your room for a nap.
