Who says homebodies can’t have an adventurous life? These family friendly movies certainly take us on a wild adventure without ever leaving home. For this movie list, I am considering movies that MOSTLY take place at home, and where the house is almost like another character.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)
I loved this movie as a kid because it made me think of my backyard as one of the most exciting and dangerous places. Here, the kids get shrunk by their dad’s invention and have to survive common household activities.
Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)
Sophie and Howl are introverts who don’t get out much. But when Sophie has a spell casted upon her, she finds herself living in Howl’s “castle” with a magical door and many interesting inhabitants and visitors.
Up (2009)
Who wouldn’t want to bring their house with them on an epic adventure to Paradise Falls? Carl is quite literally tethered to his house for the majority of the film.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
The Beast and Belle have plenty to keep them occupied in an enchanted castle.
Toy Story (1995)
While Woody and Buzz do have a little excursion to Pizza Planet and Sid’s house, a good portion of the movie is about the mischief that toys get into in Andy’s room when no one’s watching.
Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
I might be one of the few people who actually enjoys the Swiss Family Robinson’s Treehouse in Adventureland. When I was a kid, I would fantasize about living in their treehouse and what an adventure that would be.
James and the Giant Peach (1996)
James runs away from his cruel aunts and lives in a giant peach seed. There, he meets some charming rather than creepy crawlers living with him. The peach rolls away and takes them on an adventure across the ocean.
Zathura (2005)
This is sort of like Jumanji but in space. The boys are home bound but that doesn’t stop them from going on a galactic adventure.
Home Alone (1990)
Kevin just wants a quiet Christmas at home. Unfortunately, he has a lot of unexpected danger that finds him.
