Fairfax Fare in Hollywood Studios has reopened with a new menu! Vegans, vegetarians, and plant-based curios have a hot diggity dog of an option. Here, you’ll find the Plant-based Chicago Hot Dog Salad. Yes, you read that right, Chicago Hot Dog Salad…WHAT!?!?!
Personally, I feel like a dream I didn’t realize I had just came true. Being from Chicago and a vegetarian is a difficult thing. The Chicago hot dog purists in my family viewed my Chicago hot dog order without the hot dog as blasphemy. Yet, I love all the fixings of the regional dog. I can’t even explain my excitement and anticipation when I saw this option at Hollywood Studios, I now know how Liz Lemon felt on Sandwich Day.
The Chicago Hot Dog Salad comes with romaine blend, plant-based bratwurst (I’m pretty sure Beyond), sliced sport peppers, tomatoes, onions, house-made dill pickle, sweet relish, mustard, and poppy and celery seed brioche croutons tossed in neon green relish vinaigrette.
So, did this salad live up to my expectations? Yes, for the most part. While it doesn’t come close to having a Chicago style hot dog with a poppy seed bun, it has all of the yummy goodness that goes atop a Chicago hot dog. I was unsure how the salad mix would go with the rest of the ingredients. Salad and hot dogs seem like two entities that should never get along. Yet, here they were mingling in harmony. The one challenge of this dish is that it was hard to create a perfect bite that had all of the flavors. The combination of flavors in a single bite is what I love about my hot dog free Chicago hot dog order.
One thing that I liked about this item was how easy it is to share. It’s symmetrical presentation and brat cut in half made it easy to split with someone else (I’m not sharing an actual hot dog with anyone). I would definitely order this “salad” again. It was filling without making me too full to go on thrill rides afterwards.
Fairfax Fare is currently operating 11am-3pm.
